A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
Well, perhaps it wasn’t so far away, and not so long ago. The next bit of the crawl would be more or less true, though… there was a great deal of conflict, a sort of cultural civil war between mainstream culture and various subcultures and countercultures. The battles of this conflict were fought in books, radio, movies and (most of all) television; the rebel factions struggling against the mainstream to make sure that their aesthetics and values were respected in the public sphere.
Culture is a fluid and arbitrary thing, and so these struggles are still a fixture of modern life. The aspect of this which is of particular interest here is the convergence of geek subculture and mainstream culture; while there is certainly still conflict between the two, it is quite clear that the mainstream has started adopting a lot of the imagery and values shared by people who have been rejected and reviled for years as geeks, nerds, dorks and dweebs.
Who said it? The geek shall inherit the earth.
